26 May 2006
With effect from 26 May 2006, in conjunction with the opening of Cathay Cineplexes flagship multiplex in Kuala Lumpur, Mega Pavilion Cinemas is now known as Cathay Cineplexes.
The change in name from Mega Pavilion Cinemas to Cathay Cineplexes is aimed at enhancing and strengthening the Cathay brand in Malaysia and is a reminder of its association to Cathay in Singapore.
Cathay Organisation’s history as the forerunner in the movie entertainment industry started in 1936 when its first cinema, the 1,200 seat The Pavilion opened in Kuala Lumpur
Cathay became a household name in the 1970s when it was at its peak in Malaysia and Singapore. The changing economic situation of the 1980s resulted in a major rationalization of the cinema business, and Cathay’s cinema empire was suitably trimmed.
However, Cathay Organisation was quick to re-invent and innovate. Today, it is a leading company engaged in the businesses of entertainment, leisure, lifestyle and property management services. Cinema operations, film distribution and exhibition continue to remain as its core business and strengths.
Cathay Cineplex Cineleisure Orchard is Singapore’s top draw for avid movie-goers looking for top-of-line cinematic experience. In December 2000, Cathay Cineplexes Pte Ltd became Singapore’s first cinema operator to achieve ISO 9002 certification awarded by the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board (PSB).
The change in name from Mega Pavilion Cinemas to Cathay Cineplexes reinforces the same commitment to providing products and services that consistently meet the highest quality standards. With five Cineplexes now under the Cathay Cineplexes brand, this marks the return to its roots and commitment to bring Malaysians more exciting entertainment experiences.
Cathay Organisation Holding’s President for Business Operations, Mr. Suhaimi Rafdi said, “The change in name will be followed by further expansion of Cathay Cineplexes in the region. Wherever we open, we will endeavour to provide the best cinematic experience with the highest quality of services and service quality.”
